Fisher House
The mission of the Navy Fisher House program is to provide a home away from home for wounded, ill, and injured service members and their families, both Active Duty and Retired. "These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. Navy Fisher Houses assist families in need and ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment." The Fisher House provides all the comforts of home: a beautiful living room, spacious dining room, cheerful kitchen, and laundry room. There are nine Navy Fisher Houses: Five Houses at Walter Reed Naval Medical Center at NSA Bethesda, Maryland http://www.bethesda.med.navy.mil/visitor/lodging/fisher_houses.aspx. These five houses make it the largest complex in the Department of Defense. This is also the home of the first Fisher House built in 1991. The five homes allow for seventy-three families to be hosted. The five Fisher Houses are located near our Nation's Capital and as a part of the President's hospital. WRNMMC is also home of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence ( NICoE) donated by the Fisher Intrepid Organization with its ground breaking research in Traumatic Brain Injury Research and Medicine. Fisher House Three hosts the families who are here for treatment at that facility. There are two Fisher Houses located at Naval Medical Center (NMC) San Diego, California http://www.fisherhouse.org/houses/house-locations/california/naval-medical-center-san-diego/ . The two houses are nestled in the lush Canyon with a total of 18 rooms comfortably furnished and ADA compliant. There is one Fisher House at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia (http://www.fisherhouse.org/houses/house-locations/virginia/naval-medical-center-portsmouth/ ). The Portsmouth Fisher House is located at the Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia, in the historical district of Portsmouth, surrounded by the Elizabeth River. An interesting fact about the Fireplace mantle in the Portsmouth Fisher House is that it is actually from an old government quarters which was built in 1805. Here families find refuge from the tension of the hospital and join together to form a supportive community. Lots of hugs are given at the Portsmouth Fisher House. There is one Fisher House at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune (http://www.lejeunefisherhouse.org.)This Fisher House is the first aboard a Marine Corps installation and the first as part of an entire Wounded Warrior Complex. Within the Complex, there is also a two hundred man barracks for Wounded Warrior Battalion-East as well as a Headquarters building and the Warrior Hope & Care Rehabilitation Center. Referrals can be made by contacting the Houses directly. Volunteerism is much appreciated and can also be accomplished by contacting the Houses directly.

The toll-free number for the Navy Lodge Central Reservation Center (CRC) is 1-800-NAVY-INN (1-800-628-9466). You can also make reservations via the web page www.Navy-Lodge.com (48 hours required).

Information on Navy BOQs and BEQs in the US and overseas is available at the Navy Bachelor Housing Directory. Gone are the days of open bays, central heads and three or four Sailors sharing a room with bare concrete block walls. Today's bachelor quarters are clean, contemporary, more spacious and filled with amenities.

Navy transient facilities are for authorized military and DoD civilians and military retirees on official travel orders. Non-duty military and retirees may stay on a space available basis.

Notes: When government lodging is certified not-available, ask the CTO to book a Navy Elite hotel for you. The Navy Elite Lodging Plan offers three different types of hotel accommodations -- economy, mid-priced and deluxe properties. The hotels are selected for inclusion in the program based on the following criteria:

  • All must offer rates that are at or below the local per diem rate for lodging.
  • All must be U.S. Government Safety/Fire Approved with a FEMA-assigned number.
  • In general, all locations are within a 5-mile radius or a 15-minute driving distance during rush hour to the Navy Base of assignment.
  • All can be booked and confirmed via the airlines' Computer Reservation Systems.
  • All have quality accommodations, well-maintained facilities and offer special amenities for Navy travelers.
  • All have upgraded rooms within the last five years or plan to carry out renovation.
