In addition to the your basic pay benefits and allowances, you may receive special pays and incentive pays depending on your career field or location-even when you first join the military.

Servicemembers can qualify for additional or "special" pay due to their qualifications, assignments and certain skills. For example servicemembers can may be able to get special pay based their ability to speak foreign languages. In addition, being assigned to certain duty assignments like shipboard tie-down crew or EOD technician can make them eligible for hazardous duty pay.
