Top 10 Most Expensive and Least Expensive States for Auto Insurance

Car insurance, although necessary, can be a considerable addition to the cost of your vehicle. In most cases, car insurance will cost you as much as $200 per month, on top of your monthly car payment. What’s more, a 2010 AAA study titled, “Your Driving Costs,” found that the average cost to insure a sedan – including collision and comprehensive coverage – increased by 5.6 percent to $1,031.

Insurance premiums are determined upon several factors including age, gender, type of car and driving record. But one of the most important factors is state of residence. In fact, premiums vary greatly from state to state. For example, this year the average cost for auto insurance is $1,096 in Louisiana, but only $782 for a driver in Georgia.

Before you look for car insurance – or even purchase a vehicle – it’s wise to avoid any unpleasant surprises, and research the average cost of insurance for your state.

The NAIC’s list is based on a state’s economy, traffic density, income per capita, and urban population. In fact, the NAIC found that the healthier the economy, the more likely people are to purchase new cars and auto insurance that covers physical damage – hence the higher amount of expenditures. Additionally, states with more expensive auto insurance have an increased likelihood for car theft and vandalism.
