Montgomery GI Bill

Montgomery GI Bill benefits are available for servicemembers and veterans to help with education and training costs by providing over $51,000 in cash and numerous support programs.

The value of the MGIB is based on the current maximum monthly payment rate of $1473 multiplied by the 36-month limit. This "payment rate" automatically adjusts for inflation on the first of October each year. You get current payment rate no matter when you became eligible or begin using it.

The term "36 months of benefits" refers to academic months.  This means you will have up to 8 semesters (four years) of traditional academic education.

Your MGIB can be used to pay for many different programs including the following:

1. College, Business Technical or Vocational Courses
2. Distance Learning including Correspondence Courses
3. Apprenticeship/Job Training (Veterans and Reserve Only)
4. Flight Training
5. Licensing and Certification Exams

Note: Your actual benefits may be higher if you signed up for the Army, Navy or Marine Corps College Funds.

Eligibility
You qualify for the Montgomery GI Bill if:

1. You contribute $100 a month for the first 12 months you are in active duty, or qualify under VEAP conversion.
2. You have completed High School or have an equivalency certificate before you apply for benefits.
3. You have served at least 2 years on active duty.
