Military families are always on the lookout for great discounts, but they are even more vital during a government shutdown. Check out this list of discounts offered to service members and their families.

1. Home Improvement

Owning a home means constant maintenance, projects and repairs. Thankfully, both Home Depot and Lowe's offer year-round 10 percent discounts to help you stock up on all your home improvement needs.

2. Travel

Military families are always on the go, but travel is expensive. Before booking that flight, keep in mind that not only can you fly Space-A, but many airlines also offer military discounts on airfare and baggage fees. For instance, Southwest offers airfare discounts. Alaska Airlines, Allegiant and American Airlines offer baggage fee discounts. And Delta and JetBlue offers discounts on both airfare and baggage.

3. Hotels

If you're traveling, you're probably going to need a hotel to stay in. If lodging on base isn't an option, look into the long list of hotels that offer military discounts, including Best Western, Marriott, Choice Hotels and Red Roof Inn.

4. Taxes

Tax season is here, and it's time to prepare your return. Many military installations provide free tax services but, if your local base doesn't, you can take advantage of military discounts offered by Liberty Tax, TaxSlayer and TurboTax. And don't forget that Military OneSource provides free tax preparation and filing services and tax consultations.

5. Technology

Apple users got good news recently. The latest Apple military discount gives veterans, military members and their immediate families 10 percent off iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and accessories through an online portal.

6. Cell phones

Many cell phone companies offer military discounts, including T-Mobile. Its ONE Military plan offers half off family lines and gives service members all the benefits of its unlimited plan at a discounted price, including unlimited talk, text and data, in-flight texting and more.

7. Groceries

Grocery bills don't stop during a government shutdown. And while you may be able to get creative with the food you already have in your pantry and freezer, you'll need to buy more at some point. At Sam's Club, you can join or renew as a member and get a $10 gift card. Costco offers new military members more than $60 in savings when joining. And Fred Meyer offers a 10 percent military discount. (Some Fred Meyer locations offer the military discount on specific dates, so call your local store to ask when the discount is available.)
