Transiting through the Strait of Magellan on board USS George Washington, the commander of Carrier Strike Group 8 explained the importance of interoperability and partnership building in the Southern Hemisphere. The Strait of Magellan is located along the southern edges of the South American continent.

While conducting operations as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, USS Shoup (DDG 86) assisted a disabled dhow, by towing it from the Gulf of Aden to Al-Mukalla, Yemen. Dunia, a 15-meter dhow, experienced a serious engine problem, leaving it unable to operate at sea.

Navy pilots from Argentina trained with their counterparts from the U.S. Navy while performing low approaches to the flight deck of USS George Washington. The aerial evolution involved coordination with GW's air department, Carrier Air Wing 17, currently embarked on GW, and an Argentine Landing Signal Officer, who was on station on the GW's LSO platform during the evolution.

Secretary of the Navy, Donald C. Winter announced on May 7 at a ceremony in Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y., the name of the newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer will be USS Michael Murphy. Designated as DDG 112, the name honors Lt. Michael Murphy who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during Operation Red Wing, in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.

Twenty-one Sailors from Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 4, along with more than 200 other supporters, participated in the 5th annual South Hampton Roads Arthritis Walk sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation, Virginia Chapter, at Harbor Park. ACU-4 was this year's top fundraising team, raising more than $2,000 for the Arthritis Foundation.

Seven weeks into their seven-month deployment, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Sailors made time to celebrate the National Day of Prayer by gathering together, for a special breakfast on the forward mess decks. With nearly 100 personnel attending, Abraham Lincoln's Full Gospel Choir sang songs of hope and freedom.

Thirteen Sailors from Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) spent three hours at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The Sailors went to the museum as part of the ship's Heritage Tours, monthly tours designed to instill a sense of history and understanding of the Navy's rich heritage.
