From as far back as he can remember he was always treated like a Marine by his family and relatives. Growing up, Recruit John Kidwell, Platoon 1063, was surrounded by family and friends who were Marines, so he was used to the military way of life, said his grandfather, Richard Kidwell, a retired sergeant major. He said he wasn't surprised when his grandson chose the Marine Corps.

During past amphibious assaults, some Americans have lost their lives by drowning in the surf. To give Marines a basic understanding of how to survive the watery forces of nature, they must qualify in Combat Water Survival training during boot camp.

Say goodbye to the Marine Corps marksman. From now on, all Marines will be either sharpshooters or experts. Those lines may as well be written into the new Marine Corps Combat Marksmanship Program order, which has effectively lowered the Corps' standard for excellence in rifle marksmanship.

The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit will depart for its Expeditionary Strike Group Integration Training. The training, part of the 26th MEU's six month predeployment training cycle, will be the first time the elements of the MEU will load their equipment and personnel aboard the ships that will make up the USS Iwo Jima ESG.

Col. Stephen F. Kirkpatrick assumed command of Marine Wing Support Group 27 during a ceremony at the air station parade field. Kirkpatrick relieved Col. Peter M. Warker, who will go on to serve as the inspector general for Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command.

When Matthew Tulloh stood on the yellow footprints at Marine Corps Recruit Training two and half years ago, he thought there was no way he'd end up manning a .50-caliber machine gun for six months in Iraq.
