SILVERDALE, Wash. - More than 300 service members and their guests attended the Navy Birthday Ball held at the Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor Plaza Ballroom.
"It's important to celebrate the Navy's birthday because it teaches junior Sailors the significance of our tradition, and it's also a reminder of where we began," said Master-at-Arms 1st Class (SW/AW) Ritchetta Sanders, event coordinator. "This evening is really special to me because I get to reflect on the rich naval history and share it with my mother, who is present tonight."
To kick off the event, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (SW/AW) Psyletta Gilroy, Naval Hospital Bremerton, had the honor of singing the Star Spangled Banner.
"I was honored and privileged to sing at the Navy ball tonight," said Gilroy. "I am proud to serve for this great institution."
The theme for the ball was "Diverse Horizons." The guest speaker for the event was Rear Adm. James A. Symonds, commander, Navy Region Northwest. When introduced to the Sailors at the event, the first thing Symonds did was thank everyone for their attendance.
"I would like to thank everyone for being here this evening; this event marks a very special anniversary," said Symonds. "Tonight we celebrate 233 years of honor and the many accomplishments that shape our Navy today. The fundamental strength of the Navy has shone throughout the years. Happy Birthday, U.S. Navy."
Holding with tradition, the oldest Sailor in the crowd, Capt. Jim Stone, Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) commanding officer, was called forward along with the youngest Sailor, Culinary Specialist Seaman Christy Probost from NBK; together, they cut the birthday cake.
After the cake cutting, entertainers from Taproot entertainment performed an improvisation show for the crowd.
Following the entertainment, raffle tickets were drawn with more than $1,700 in prizes given out all through the evening.
"This is my first Navy ball," said Culinary Specialist Seaman Aaron Beeler, NBK. "Since I am new to the Navy I want to embrace its heritage and learn more about it. And hopefully win a prize."
