Educational Opportunities for Children (10-18 Yrs):Financial aid is provided annually to each child between the ages of 10 and 18 years of a veteran who died or became totally disabled as a result of service in the Armed Forces during World War I, or II, the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts or beginning February 1, 1955, until such individuals are no longer eligible for induction under the Universal Military Training and Service Act. Attendance means a state educational institution of elementary grade, a high school or business college, vocational training school or other educational institution.

MIA/POW Scholarship: Dependents of a veteran who has been declared by the Department of Defense or U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs to be a prisoner of war; missing-in-action; to have died as the result of a service-connected disability; or be permanently disabled from service-connected causes with 100% disability; and, who was an Illinois resident or was an Illinois resident within six months of entering service may be eligible for the scholarship. Eligible dependents are entitled to full payment of tuition and certain fees to any state supported Illinois institution of higher learning consisting of the equivalent of four (4) calendar years of full-time enrollment including summer terms (i.e., 120 points).

State Approving Agency. Approves training for veterans in the areas of higher education, apprenticeship training, vocational training, and on the job training.

Veterans' Grant: The Illinois Veteran Grant (IVG) Program pays tuition and certain fees at all Illinois state-supported colleges, universities and community colleges for Illinois residents. An individual must:

  • be a veteran; and
  • reside in Illinois six months before entering the service; and
  • have at least one full year of active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces or if service was in Desert Storm or aiding Somalia one full year of active duty may not be required; 
  • and return to Illinois within six months of discharge from the service.

Illinois National Guard Scholarship: Any enlisted person or Lieutenant or Captain with at least one (1) year service in the Illinois Army/Air National Guard may participate. Available for eight (8) semesters or twelve (12) quarters of full-time or part-time undergraduate study or graduate study at any Illinois state-controlled university or community college. Recipient is entitled to payment of tuition and certain fees. Applications and information on the scholarship may be obtained from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, 1755 Lake Cook Road, Deerfield, Illinois, 60015, telephone 847/948-8550 or 800/899-ISAC.

Honorary Scholarships: Each county in the state shall be entitled, annually, to one honorary scholarship in the University of Illinois, for the benefit of children of veterans of WWI, WWII, Korean and Vietnam Conflict periods with preference being given to the children of deceased and disabled veterans. Such children shall be entitled to receive, without charge for tuition, instruction in any or all departments of the University for a term of at least four (4) consecutive years. Kansas

POW/MIA Vietnam Veteran Dependent Tuition Program:

Benefit: Free tuition and fees for up to 12 semesters of instruction at all institutions supported by state monies offering postsecondary education in Kansas.

Eligibility: Children or any child legally adopted or in legal custody of a person who entered services in the U.S. Armed Forces as a Kansas resident and became a POW or MIA or Killed in Action during the Vietnam Conflict, as established by the Secretary of Defense after 1/1/60, and who had a dependent actually living in Kansas on 4/1/72. After qualifying under the terms of the act, return or reported death will not alter the provisions of the benefit

Vietnam Veteran Survivor Grant:

Benefit: Free tuition and fees for up to 12 semesters of instruction at all institutions supported by state monies offering postsecondary education in Kansas.

Eligibility: Children or any child legally adopted or in legal custody of a person who was a Kansas resident at the time such person entered service in the Armed Forces and who, while serving in the geographical area of the Vietnam Conflict, has died as the result of service-connected disability suffered during the Vietnam Conflict as a result of the Conflict

Missouri

Vietnam Veterans Survivor Grant Program

This grant is available to children and spouses of Vietnam veterans whose death was attributed or caused by exposure to toxic chemicals during the Vietnam conflict. To be eligible, you must: 1.) be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student at a participating Missouri postsecondary institution 2.) maintain satisfactory academic progress according to standards determined by the approved institution 3.) be a Missouri resident and a United States citizen or eligible noncitizen, and not be pursuing a degree or certificate in theology or divinity

The applicant must provide a qualified medical certification by a Department of Veterans Affairs medical authority to verify that the exposure to toxic chemicals contributed to or was the cause of the death of the veteran. Grants can be renewed annually until a student has obtained a degree or has completed 150 semester credit hours, whichever comes first. Grant awards are not available during summer school terms.

How much can I receive?
The maximum annual grant amount is the least of: the actual tuition charged at the school where you are enrolled full-time, or the amount of tuition charged to a Missouri undergraduate resident enrolled full-time in the same class level and in the same academic major as an applicant at the University of Missouri-Columbia

Nebraska

Nebraska State Tuition Waiver

ELIGIBILITY:

  1. Dependents of POW/MIA: Children, wife, or widow(er) of veteran, listed as POW/MIA during hostilities after 8/4/64, and Nebraska resident at time of entrance into Armed Forces, or is a Nebraska resident at the time student would attend school.

  2. Dependents: Child, spouse, widow(er), Nebraska resident whose parent/spouse died of service-connected disability in W.W.I; died on 12/7/41 or subsequently until such day the legislature shall determine; or died subsequent to discharge as result of injury or illness sustained while member of the Armed Forces which may or may not have resulted in total disability. Also, children, spouses, or widow(er)s or totally disabled service-connected veterans who met other requirements may qualify.

BENEFITS: Tuition waiver at University of Nebraska, state colleges, and technical community colleges.
