SAN FRANCISCO -- The Coast Guard command center in San Francisco received a distress call via 911-relay from a security guard at the C&H Sugar Refinery that an individual came ashore around 5 a.m.. Friday and reported that his boat had capsized and two other people remained in the water.
The reporting source, a 25-year-old male, claimed that he, his mother and a friend had capsized in a boat around sunset Thursday in the vicinity of Pinole Point. The man was soaking wet and wearing a life jacket. A rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Vallejo and a helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco were launched, and the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department was dispatched to make contact with the reporting source and obtain more information.
At approximately 7 a.m. a good Samaritan discovered the two missing individuals and recovered them both, cold but alive. The two people were then transferred to the Coast Guard Station Vallejo rescue boat and were transported to emergency medical services to assist on shore.
"In this case lifejackets made the difference in saving the lives of all three persons," said Capt. Greg Stump, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. "In addition to lifejackets for everyone aboard, mariners are urged to have a marine VHF radio and other signaling devices to assist in rescue efforts."
