Cmdr. Joe V. Martinez, the commanding officer of a squadron assigned to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, has been relieved of duty after an investigation determined he made false statements and inappropriate racial comments, the Navy said Thursday.

Martinez was relieved of his command of Electronic Attack Squadron 140 on Wednesday by Capt. Terry S. Morris, commander of Carrier Air Wing 7, the Navy said.

A Judge Advocate General Manual investigation found that Martinez "willfully ignored Navy instructions, knowingly submitted officer Fitness Reports containing inaccurate information, made inappropriate racial comments, exercised undue influence on subordinates, and made false or misleading statements," the Navy statement said.

Martinez, of El Paso, Texas, has commanded the squadron since November 2012. He has been temporarily assigned to Electronic Attack Wing Pacific.

Cmdr. Scott Hardy was named interim commanding officer of the Whidbey Island, Wash.-based squadron, which is attached to the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower, based in Norfolk, Va.

In 2011, the No. 2 officer aboard the USS Eisenhower, Capt. Robert Gamberg, was relieved of his command in the wake of an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a female soldier.
