US Appeals Guantanamo Genital Search Ban

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration is appealing a federal judge's order banning genital searches of Guantanamo Bay detainees who want to meet with their lawyers.

The Justice Department filed a notice of appeal of Judge Royce Lamberth's order Wednesday.

The government asked Lamberth to delay his order, arguing that it would weaken security at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba. Lamberth has not yet acted on the request.

In his ruling last week, Lamberth concluded that the motivation for the searches is not to enhance security but to deter the detainees' access to attorneys.

He also wrote that the genital searches were religiously and culturally abhorrent to devout Muslims.
