Paxton Named Assistant Commandant

A former II Marine Expeditionary Force commanding general was promoted to general and assistant commandant of the Marine Corps over the weekend.

Gen. John Paxton pinned on a fourth star in Washington, D.C., on Saturday and is replacing Gen. Joseph Dunford as assistant commandant of the Marine Corps.

Dunford will take over in February as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.

Paxton's promotion to general means the Corps now has six four-star generals, which has only occurred one other time in the Corps' history.
