KITTERY, Maine - U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine says an early estimate from the Navy puts the price tag of repairs for a fire-damaged submarine in the range of about $400 million.
Pingree released the estimate Tuesday, a day after seeing damage firsthand inside the nuclear-powered USS Miami. The sub was in dry dock at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard when the fire broke out on May 23.
Pingree says the number could change, but the early number is "a workable figure" and that she's optimistic the sub can be repaired. Her figure contrasts with an estimate a week ago from Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal of $700 million to $1 billion for repairs.
The Navy is still assessing the damage. It intends to provide a formal estimate for the 22-year-old submarine in a few weeks.
