Step 3: Choose the right path
Enlisted Options: Navy Enlisted
Enlistees must be between the ages of 17 and 34. Parental
consent is required for all 17-year-olds. In the nuclear field, the maximum
enlistment age is 25 due to extensive training requirements. The Navy prefers
young people to stay in school and graduate; however, there are limited opportunities
for non-high school grads.
Enlistees must be U.S. citizens or immigrant aliens
with immigration and naturalization papers. A physical examination and the Armed
Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test must be completed.
Initial enlistment in the Navy ranges from three to six years. After going through
the enlistment process at a Military Entrance Processing Station, Navy enlistees
usually are placed in the Delayed
Entry Program (DEP). Recruits in the DEP are guaranteed training assignments.
DEP allows them to prepare for boot camp by attending training meetings with
their recruiter.
There is extra pay
in the Navy for sea duty, submarine duty, demolition duty, diving duty, work
as a crew member of an aviation team or jobs that require special training.
Many fields such as the nuclear field require individuals with critical and
unique skills and offer quicker promotions and bonuses when training is complete.
