MIAMI -- Six Cuban migrants were repatriated by the Coast Guard Cutter Chandeleur at approximately 10 a.m. today to Bahia de Cabanas, Cuba, after being rescued by a Coast Guard crew from Station Key West, Fla., Monday.
Coast Guard Sector Key West recieved the call from a Good Samaritan who reported the migrants were located approximately five miles south of Boca Chica Key, Fla.
A 41-foot rescue boat from Station Key West arrived on scene and safely embarked the six migrants.
The migrant vessel was destroyed as a hazard to navigation.
The migrants were later transferred to the cutter Venturous, a 210-foot cutter homeported in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Once on board Coast Guard cutters, all migrants receive food, water, lifejackets and any necessary medical attention. Determination of a migrant's status is made by the U.S. Government and coordinated by Homeland Security immigration officials.
The Chandeleur is a 110-foot patrol boat stationed in Miami Beach, Fla.
