The Pentagon's slow response to wartime challenges such as protecting troops against roadside bombs stemmed in part from a mistaken belief within the DoD that the Iraq and Afghanistan wars would be short, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said.
The operation started when Soldiers from International Security Assistance Force and the Afghan National Army made a simultaneously night air assault onto three mountains above Gowerdesh Bridge. The ANA built three local observation posts near the bridge during the first few days of the operation.
The "Gladiators" of Strike Fighter Squadron 106 launched a mission against Cancer by inviting the chief financial officer for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, to take a tour of the command. CFO Greg Lee got a firsthand look at an F/A-18E Super Hornet and took a tour of the Gladiators' tower.

Eight scout snipers and spotters with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division reinforced their position as the Marine Corps' 'hunters of gunmen' during an Urban Sniper Course. The course, run by III Marine Expeditionary Force's Special Operations Training Group, supplemented the snipers' basic skills training.

Following an inspection of scores of shipping containers, the Coast Guard today reports findings consistent with a compliant and safe shipping industry in the port of Boston. The Coast Guard and nearly two dozen other federal, state and local agencies joined at four high-traffic shipping points in Boston in search of dangerous cargo inside inter-modal containers.
