Do you know a veteran hero or active-duty servicemember you think is deserving of recognition? What about a military family you know could use a much needed break? This month, through a contest launched by the Myrtle Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, you’ll have a chance to do that special something for a servicemember and his or her family.
The Myrtle Beach One Million Military Contest was launched on Sept. 16, 2013, to celebrate and recognize deserving U.S. troops and their families. The contest aims to honor a military family with the chance to win a week-long family reunion trip to Myrtle Beach by awarding them one million US Airways dividend miles.
Here’s how it works: Friends and family of active-duty servicemembers, retired and/or veteran heroes are encouraged to nominate a family who will receive a 7 day, 6 night stay at an oceanfront vacation home, a $500 Kroger gift card and one million US Airways dividend miles to help cover transportation expenses.
To nominate a family, simply submit a story and video to www.VisitMyrtleBeach.com/MYR1Million by Oct. 7, 2013. Five finalists will be announced on Oct. 21 and Facebook fans will be asked to vote for the most deserving family. The grand-prize winner will be announced on Veteran’s Day -- Nov. 11, 2013.
Myrtle Beach is a very popular all-year round vacation spot. In fact, the experts have voted and this is what they had to say:
Myrtle Beach is among America’s top 10 Water Parks (Trip Adviser).
It’s one of the Most Fun, Affordable Cities (Better Homes & Gardens).
It's among the top 10 Public Gardens (Coastal Living Magazine).
And is in the 5op 5 Summer Travel Destinations (Travel Ticker).
The busiest time of year begins March 1 and ends Labor Day weekend, but even in the off season there’s something going on in the area. There is the Grand Strand Boat Show (January); the Myrtle Beach Marathon (February); the Fishing Rodeo (September); Oktoberfest (October); the Christmas Show and Festival Week and the South Carolina State Blue Grass Festival (November); and Nights of a Thousand Candles (December).
