This week, President Donald Trump gave a speech in Louisville, Kentucky, to the 75th annual convention of AMVETS, the American Veterans service organization.

As he praised World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Woody Williams, the president made a little joke.

"Thank you, Woody. You're looking good, Woody. Woody's looking good," Trump said. "That was a big day, Medal of Honor. Nothing like the Medal of Honor. I wanted one, but they told me I don't qualify, Woody. I said, 'Can I give it to myself anyway?' They said, 'I don't think that's a good idea.'"

As shown in the video above, quite a few people in the audience laughed. Trump wrapped up with "Great, great people. These are great, great men and women that get congressional Medal of Honor. Thank you, Woody."

Before anyone gets outraged, props to the president for the subtle shoutout to Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the only female recipient of the Medal of Honor. She was recognized for her bravery on behalf of the Union during the Civil War.

Presidents joking with veterans is a Great American Tradition. It's tough to be the leader, and some of the only people who've made greater sacrifices for their country are military veterans. Presidents, no matter their political stripes, always seem to relax and loosen up when talking to veterans.

Which leads us to the joke. Many Americans see the Medal of Honor ceremony as the most sacred and important rite in our military culture. No one really wants to be in a position to receive one, and the men (and woman) who've been so honored have lived through terrifying experiences and demonstrated incredible character.
