What is the draw of combat that keeps young men coming back for more? It is a line from Thomas O. Mordaunt's(1730-1809) poem "The Call", "Sound, sound the clarion, fill the fife, Throughout the sensual world proclaim, One crowded hour of glorious life Is worth an age without a name" If you've never been a part of a group in a life and death struggle, it's hard for most people to understand the bond that creates. That is why you will never hear a Metal of Honor winner take all the glory and honor to themselves. This is why the remaining members of the 300 Spartans did not leave the "Hell's gates". You don't leave your fallen. You either take them with you or you die beside them. If you think that sentiment is ancient history you only have to look to the "Battle of the Shok Valley. http://www.army.mil/article/15160/fi...-silver-stars/ Here's a quote: "We were completely pinned down. There was intense fire all around us. We couldn't leave the casualties. We were prepared to sit there and die with them" That would be a great re-up tool. The Army could send out emails to former soldiers. In those emails, they could say, 'Hey, remember your pal Joe. He was seriously wounded in combat 'cause you weren't there.' It might also save the military money on benefits as those who can't get back in due to psychological, and physical damage commit suicide. I'm done here...
