A most impressive Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO) at Miramar NAS Air Show on August 16, 1997. It's "Fat Albert" of the Blue Angels and it was filmed during one of the very last Miramar Air Shows with the Navy. It was in the early part of the Twilight Miramar Air Show.

This is not JATO... It is RATO (ROCKET!!!!!) I saw no jets, just turbo props and rockets.

This is nothing new for any of us that were in Marine KC130 outfits over the years. We used to do JATO assisted takeoffs mall the time. Back when The Marine Corp only had 37 planes. Go to the VMGR web pages in this server. The navy launched a C-130 off of an aircraft carrier in the sixties this way. That's impressive. I even did one Jato assist takeoff during my time as Air crew. It is a weird feeling but a good one. To my fellow aircrew past and present, GOOD HEALTH and Semper Fi
