Crazy Near Miss During Air Refuel
"...Here is an opinion about what happened: "Do you know why the tanker nosed down? Because of the aerodynamic forces that occur between both aircraft in close proximity. You have what is called a bow wave from the receiver so just after disconnect the AWACs got low and too far forward so when it made a slight nose up correction is caused the pitch in the tanker to nose down cause the near miss. As a former boom I have been in this situation and it is scary. A breakaway should have been called by the boomer."

I worked with an air man who was a boom operator and he said they practiced a lot. This was just after desert storm when we met, Working part time together. He would be gone for days. I said where were you? Over Iraq he exclaimed. Come on I said, As he tried to explain to me what he did I couldn't picture it in my mind. Then one day watching the history channel or what have you they showed exactly how the boom operator did his/her job. I was in awe of this. How they laid down back there all alone yet in constant contact with both aircraft. I was also very jealous of this. It's a very difficult job and a huge responsibility. When I entered the ANG I was asked to be a pilot because of my high scores and eye site, I guess. I had talked the commanding officer at seagirt to let me in after my physical was fine except that when I was fifteen I was hit by a motorcycle and my left leg was crooked and shorter then my right. But I begged him to let me in and he did. During a fall while running I hurt my left knee, Although I told my DI I was OK he sent me to the hospital for their protection. This was just before they started the Apache program so I would have been in one for sure.
That was crazy. I bet the crew in the AWACS had to clean their shorts after that ride.
I agreed a "Breakaway should have been called"!
Near miss? Shouldn't they be calling it a near hit? If two aircraft actually collided then I'd probably say "look, they nearly missed".
