After test pilot Bill Weaver crashed, he thought he had died. It turns out he was falling from the edge of outer space, after his SR-71 Blackbird spy plane had disintegrated at 79,000 feet. From: PLANES THAT CHANGED THE WORLD: SR-71 Blackbird ---

Although 79,000 feet is more than double what commercial aircraft achieve, it is nowhere close to the edge of space. Many media reports of similar occurrences refer to this high altitude as the edge of space, yet the official edge of space is defined as 100 Kilometers (62 Miles) high, or 328,084 Feet. So, even 79,000 feet is only about 1/4 to the edge of space. I could never understand why the media insists people have fallen from the edge of space, ever, because it is simply untrue, and perhaps is one of the best examples of how naïve most people are, accepting things they hear rather than do some simple, easy research to learn the truth.

I was under the impression about 125,000 feet was considered the edge of space?

It is truly amazing that he survived. May the other pilot rest forever in peace.

For those of you with Adobe issues, it may be your browser that's causing problems. Particularly Internet Explorer and Firefox tend to have issues. Try using Chrome -- I never have Adobe problems with Chrome.

I was walking home from school in Logan New Mexico and I saw a big flash of explosion way up in the sky north and west of town and shortly later saw a big column of smoke didn't know what it was till later. I heard later what it was. My friend Fred Bruhn got the job of hauling this plan back to California
