The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., was founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft. As the undergraduate college of the naval service, the U.S. Naval Academy strives to accomplish its mission to develop midshipmen "morally, mentally, and physically." Upon graduation, Midshipmen are commissioned as Navy ensigns and Marine Corps second lieutenants. The U.S. Naval Academy is located in Annapolis, Maryland on the banks of the Severn River and on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.

The Annapolis Area Naval Complex is composed of the U.S. Naval Academy, Naval Support Activity Annapolis, and other tenant commands.

The mission of the USNA is to prepare midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically to be professional officers in the Naval Service.
