    Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian who tried to blow up a flight near Detroit on behalf of al-Qaida, was sentenced to life in prison without parole. The mandatory punishment Thursday for was never in doubt after he pleaded guilty. (Feb. 16)
