Despite being in the middle of his fifth deployment, Sgt. First Class Joseph Kern, a husband and father of two, made a surprise stop home in honor of his daughter’s 2nd birthday. Kern, who is in the Army National Guard and has been deployed since June, and his wife, Sarah Woldoff, a neuro-psychologist in Princeton, “decided after much discussion to have him come home,” Woldoff said. “The military no longer has leave, so if you come home you have to pay for it out of pocket,” she told ABC News, adding, “It was worth every dollar.”
