Chocolate Gravy: Comfort Food at Fisher House

Share

Your mother would forbid chocolate gravy at breakfast. But when you are a guest of Fisher House—those lovely folks who provide free or low cost housing for wounded, ill or injured service members and their families—the nation is grateful. You can make what you want in their kitchen.

At Ft. Bragg Fisher House in North Carolina, the resident who made chocolate gravy for breakfast was a favorite.

“I came in one morning and our guest was in the kitchen was making biscuits and chocolate gravy for breakfast,” says Lorie, a Fisher House manager. “Everyone else looked at her like she was a little crazy, but nobody complained when breakfast was served and the house smelt like chocolate all day.”

We gave this recipe a try and it was, well, addictive.  If you are looking for the healing power of a food that combines all four food groups (butter, sugar, chocolate and love), give this one a try. (And make a healthy dinner!)

Chocolate Gravy

1 cup sugar

3 1/2 Tablespoons cocoa powder

3 Tablespoons self-rising flour

1 1/2 cups whole milk

1 Tablespoon butter

Hot buttered biscuits

Mix the sugar, cocoa powder and flour together until there are no lumps. Add the milk and stir to combine. Melt the butter in large pan. Add the flour mixture and cook on medium heat, stirring continually until it thickens. Serve over hot buttered biscuits.

Chocolate gravy is not the only unusual tool of healing that they use at Fisher House locations all over the country.  If your spirit needs a lift, read these lessons that Fisher House managers have learned on the job while serving wounded, ill or injured service members and their families here.
