Tragedy at Marine Corps Housing

The military spouse community is today mourning the loss of one of its own after an explosion at an off-base military housing unit killed one spouse and seriously injured two other people.

From the Military.com story:

A woman killed in a propane gas explosion outside a remote Northern California training base was the 31-year-old wife of a U.S. Marine, and a mother of two from Hudson, Iowa, military officials said late Saturday.

The woman, Lori Hardin, was the wife of Gunnery Sgt. Greg G. Hardin of Tuolumne, Calif., a public works planner for the Marines, according to a statement from the Marine Corps.

I’m not familiar with the Marine Corps' Mountain Warfare Training Center, but it sounds like the military sponsored housing is located about 30 miles away from the base, in the town of Coleville. Officials said the explosion was caused by the housing’s propane distribution line.

If this is like any other training center community (Marine Corps or otherwise) it’s likely a very small, tight knit group of  families and training center staff. This would be a blow for any military community big or small – I cannot imagine how it feels there right now.

To Lori’s family and the family of those injured: the MilSpouse community is praying for and thinking about you!
