Coming Out of the Autistic Parent Closet

Share

Hello, my name is Rachelle, and I am the mother of a child who happens to have Asperger's syndrome. It was made official yesterday.

Deep breath....

My child, Sir Rowland, is 8, and until this year he had gone undiagnosed.

Today, I have spent a lot of time trying to process the diagnosis. The diagnosis is not a surprise, he marches to the beat of his own drum.

I am not sure where to begin discussing our experience, but I am AWARE we are NOT alone. Over the last 8 years I have learned a lot about myself from my child, and I have also learned about his challenges and talents.

I am a little curious to know if any of our readers have a child with an autistic spectrum disorder, or have any other special needs. Do you have a blog where you share details about life with your child?

I am hoping to share our experience as a National Guard family navigating through civilian schools and Tri-care with the new diagnosis.
