Marty Sederman came up with the idea of a "magic box" to help her children while their dad was away on frequent business trips-and it worked so well that she decided to write a book about it. A market research consultant, Ms. Sederman holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a master's degree in clinical psychology. She lives in New Jersey with her family.
Why not have Daddy or Mommy help craft a box before a deployment? The box could contain a photo of the deployed parent and the child on the lid. On the inside a parent and child could put some mementos. Movie ticket, sporting event, concert ticket stubs, photographs, jokes, a shell from a beach, a rock from a nature trail, a letter, maybe a poem. I am sure this box, would not only help ease a child at bed time, it would give a child something to look through, when they are missing a parent.
Do you have any ideas for a "magic box", for children during a parents absence?
