The mileage reimbursement rates for official travel via Privately Owned Vehicle decreased in 2020.
For PCS travel the Mileage Allowance In Lieu of Transportation (MALT) rate is $0.17 per mile, down from $0.20 per mile.
The official mileage distance is determined by Defense Department. The number of travelers in the vehicle has no bearing on the amount of MALT paid.
The table below shows the basic TDY mileage rates for the three vehicle types for which the government provides a mileage allowance. Again, remember government vehicle availability impacts the limitation on reimbursement if a private vehicle isn't in the government's interest.
|Current Local and TDY Travel Mileage Rates|
|Mode of Transport||Rate Per Mile||Effective Date|
|Airplane||$1.27||1 Jan 2020|
|Automobile (if no government owned vehicle is available)||$0.575||1 Jan 2020|
|Motorcycle||$0.545||1 Jan 2020|
|Other Mileage Rate. Applies when: 1. A privately owned auto is used instead of a government furnished vehicle (if a government vehicle is available) when government furnished vehicle use is to the government’s advantage; and 2. Inactive Duty Training location outside normal commute.||$0.17||1 Jan 2020|
