Commissaries Hit By Sequestration

Three announcements have been made regarding the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) stores and how they will be impacted by sequestration.

First, it was announced that case lot sales at overseas locations will be cancelled for May 2013.  This includes Hawaii and Alaska.  This will decrease costs as overseas case lot sales require significant logistical support by DeCA.

A hiring freeze was implemented on 4 February 2013, with no new external hires.

Then, DeCA announced that they will close most stores on Wednesdays if sequestration takes place.  This will be effective 31 March 2013 and extend through December 2013.  All stores in the US will be impacted, and most overseas stores will close as well.  Only overseas stores with sufficient local national staff will remain open.

At least we are getting clear information from DeCA, and they seem to have an actual plan.  Now if I can only remember not to plan my shopping for Wednesday...
