Summer...and Kids

Ah, summer.  Warm weather, long days, kids out of school...

Now, I realized that not all kids are out of school for the summer, but many are.  (I get comments every time I write something "traditional school calendar" oriented.)  My kids have been out for a whopping four days and already I'm hearing the complaints:  "I'm bored."  "I'm hungry."  "I've read all the good books in the library."

What's a parent to do?

I certainly don't claim to have all the answers, but I have scrounged together a few ideas for cheap summer projects.  Here's what is planned at the Kashman household this summer:

  • building sculptures out of toothpicks and miniature marshmallows (I suggested glue but my kids thought marshmallows would be more fun.)
  • learning how to bake bread
  • find all the free museums around us (don't forget to see the Blue Star Museum list.)
  • library, library, library
One thing we would like to do, but can't because we are overseas, is spent a day at the "Amusement Mall."  We almost never go to the mall, and  it is like Disney for my kids.  For about $20, I can let them ride a few kiddie rides, get their pictures taken in one of those photo booths, buy a small sweet treat...all things I would not let my children do under normal circumstances.   It isn't quite as much fun now that they are getting older, but it was amazing how much they could enjoy such a (relatively) inexpensive field trip.

I don't have enough ideas to fill the summer without breaking the bank.  Please share your summer plans with me!
