The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) allows wounded warriors to receive multiple grants for constructing or modifying their homes.

This rule allows eligible service members to receive up to six special adaptive grants worth up to a total of $117,014 from VA.

Eligible veterans can now apply for three different types of grants:

  1. The Specially Adapted Housing Grant (SAH),
  2. The Special Housing Adaptation Grant (SHA)
  3. The Temporary Residence Adaptation grant (TRA)

See our Specially Adapted Housing Details for more information.

For the SAH Grant: An eligible veteran or service member may receive VA grants of not more than $117,014 for fiscal year 2024.

For the SHA Grant: An eligible veteran or servicemember may receive VA grants of not more than 50% of the cost of a specially adapted house, up to the aggregate maximum amount allowable by law. The current maximum grant amount allowable for fiscal 2024 is $22,444.

TRA grants are similar to SAH and SHA grants but awarded in lower sums. TRA grants may be used to make temporary improvements to a home a veteran is living in temporarily, such as a family member's.
