WATCH: Tough Old Warship Takes Bombardment During Sinking Exercise

Check out this aerial footage of the decommissioned USS Thach (FFG-43) being bombarded by missiles and torpedoes during a live-fire sinking exercise as part of Navy's Rim of the Pacific 2016 multi-nation training event near Hawaii.

The Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigate was decommissioned in 2013 after nearly three decades of service, the service said in a release.

The live-fire sinking exercise, known as SINKEX in Navy parlance, is designed to practice gunnery, torpedo accuracy, and missile drills on decommissioned ships, providing sailors with the opportunity to practice on live targets, using real ammunition, and observe the result, the service said.

Rim of the Pacific, or RIMPAC, is taking place off the coasts of Hawaii and southern California through Aug. 4 and involves 45 ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel from 27 countries.
