Wife Charged in Death of Army Soldier on New Year's Eve

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. — The wife of a Michigan soldier who was fatally shot while on leave for the holidays has been charged in his death.

Berrien County prosecutor Mike Sepic says Kemia Hassel will appear in court Monday. He declined to discuss the specific charges until the arraignment. Jail records show she has been in custody since Saturday.

It wasn't immediately known if she has a lawyer who can comment. Another person was also arrested.

Army Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III was killed on New Year's Eve. The 23-year-old was a native of the Benton Harbor area in southwestern Michigan. His obituary listed his "loving wife" and their son as survivors. Kemia Hassel is also in the Army.

Tyrone Hassel Jr. tells TV station WSBT that his son was "assassinated."
