Founded by a veteran, Comcast routinely makes the lists of best veteran employers. In 2016, the company signed the ESGR Statement of Support, a continual recognition and support for the country’s service members and their families in peace, crises and war. (Tech. Sgt. A great way to encourage companies to hire and retain veterans is to recognize the best among them for what they already do. That's just one way VETS Indexes incentivizes corporations, nonprofits and government agencies to hire more, retain more and do more to help vets transition to civilian life.

VETS Indexes just released its latest ratings of the companies and organizations who do the most for separated veterans. The ratings are based on the results of a simple, proprietary survey that asked employers questions about practices in regard to five key areas of veteran employment:

  • Veteran hiring and recruiting
  • Veteran development and retention
  • Inclusive policies and culture
  • Support for Guard and Reserve members
  • Military spouse support

More than 300 organizations participated in the 2021 survey, which is unique in that the answers aren't anecdotal responses to essay-type questions. Instead, the VETS Indexes survey is a detailed questionnaire that provides as many as 300 data points for analysis.

When all is said and done, the best employers for vets are recognized with a VETS Indexes Employer Award, based on a star-rating system. The 2021 survey revealed 20 five-star employers:

VETS Indexes also noted four-star and three-star employers, and it recognized a handful of others for their treatment of veterans. Some interesting trends were found within the top veteran employers' practices. Almost 60% of the employers allow military spouses to work remotely, more than 70% have at least one veteran resource group and 30% have a recruiting budget just for hiring vets.
