The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is offering free online cybersecurity training to all veterans through their Federal Virtual Training Environment (FedVTE) program.
The FedVTE program, managed by DHS, contains more than 800 hours of training on topics such as ethical hacking and surveillance, risk management and malware analysis.
The program is free for all federal employees and veterans. Classes are on-demand and online.
A quick look at the course catalog discloses several interestingly titled courses available such as Ethical Hacking, Mobile Forensics and Cyber Dark Arts.
Course proficiency ranges from beginner to advanced levels. Several courses align with a variety of IT certifications such as Network +, Security +, and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). You can use the programs training pathway to determine which course levels are right for you.
The program is designed to help prepare you for important industry certification exams which are often needed to maintain professional proficiency or which allow you to progress to higher paying jobs.
Normally, such certification exam prep courses are expensive, and not covered by the GI Bill. This program allows veterans to take the prep courses for free, and if they are eligible for the GI Bill, veterans can often get the certification tests paid for by their GI Bill.
