The national nonprofit organization Hire Our Heroes has established July 25 as "National Hire a Veteran Day," and will be celebrating the day by hosting a virtual career fair for veterans seeking employment and companies looking to hire them. The holiday was established by the organization in 2017 and recognized by The Registrar at National Day Calendar.

Dan Caporale, chairman and founder of Hire Our Heroes (HOH), explained the special day by saying that despite his many years of working to employ veterans, he often wondered, "What if we could just designate a day?"

That desire to put their efforts into one highly visible day led to an online career fair to connect employers and veterans. Caporale, a Marine Corps veteran, says veterans attending the virtual career fair on Wednesday should treat it like any other in-person event by being prepared for on-the-spot interviews and dressing for success. Employers and veterans signed up for the event will be able to interact in chat rooms.

Hire Our Heroes has helped more than 10,000 veterans since it was founded in 2013. Today, the organization not only connects veterans and employers, it also helps put the veteran on the path to success by providing training and certification through Skillsoft technology so the veteran comes to the job search with the required skills and training already in place.

Skillsoft, a leader in corporate learning, donated the Percipio platform and business, digital and information technology skills content to Hire Our Heroes in order to make the training available to 100,000 veterans.

Caporale founded the organization as a response to the emerging crisis of veteran unemployment, and he still sees underemployment as a major problem. Veterans may take a job but are underemployed in that position when they could be operating at a higher level if they had the right training. He sees information technology (IT) and cybersecurity as growth fields for veterans where the barrier to entry is minimal and the career potential is growing.
