Swords to Plowshares, a San Francisco-based veteran service agency, announced it is seeking proposals for its California Veterans Employment and Training Collaborative grant program, which is designed to increase and improve job training programs for California veterans. The grants will help veterans recently separated from the military prepare for and find new careers.

Amy N. Fairweather, director of Swords to Plowshares Institute for Veteran Policy, notes the grant's special emphasis on assisting current-era veterans in training for, and securing, high-wage jobs.

"Veteran employment and training providers have been modifying service strategies as more Post-9/11 veterans return home to the civilian job market," Fairweather said. "We will apply lessons learned through this grant opportunity, building and sustaining programs that meet the needs of young veterans to build careers, both now and in the future."

A total of $500,000 will be awarded to a minimum of seven nonprofit organizations. Successful grant applicants must prove the ability to implement vocational training programs as well as provide integrated supportive services that target post-9/11 veterans and recently separated veterans. Grant awards will range from $30,000 to $70,000. Swords to Plowshares will begin accepting requests for program support on Feb. 18, 2014, with all proposals due by April 1, 2014.

Any 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in California currently operating employment service programs is encouraged to apply. Visit the Swords to Plowshares website (no phone calls, please) for details on how to submit a proposal: www.swords-to-plowshares.org.
