Megan Leavey (now in theaters) has been marketed as a movie about one Marine's efforts to adopt her military working dog and deal with her own post-traumatic stress. That's the focus of our interview with director Gabriela Cowperthwaite and our video interviews with Cowperthwaite and actors Kate Mara, Common and Ramon Rodriguez.

Those themes are a big reason why the movie works but there's also combat in Iraq. A lot of personal military stories forget the action scenes but Megan Leavey effectively uses its battle sequences to get the story across.

Want proof? Check out this exclusive clip from the film. Rex the working dog starts barking like crazy in the midst of battle. The humans at first think he's freaked out by the explosions but it turns out that Rex is determined to save one of his fellow troops from a sniper attack.
