Underworld: Blood Wars (out now on 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD) is the fifth movie in Kate Beckinsale's vampire revenge series. This time, Beckinsale's character Selene must fight both the Lycans and the Vampires.
The mythology of the Underworld is complicated. If you're at least familiar with a couple of the earlier movies, you'll be lost here. Imagine starting Game of Thrones at season 3 and trying to follow the plot. Actually, for fans of the ancients and all their weird rituals, Underworld is sort of like Games of Thrones with added vampires.
Blood Wars marks the feature directing debut of cinematographer and TV director Anna Foerster. She brings the series back to life after the relative creative disaster of 2012's Underworld: Awakening. There's still a sense in Hollywood that "women can't carry an action picture" but both the Underworld and Resident Evil series (starring Milla Jovovich) have offered ample evidence to the contrary over the last decade or so. There are rumors of an Underworld #6, so expect another movie in a couple of years even though this one seems to have delivered an effective end to Selene's story.
The 4K, Blu-ray and Digital extras include a digital version of the movie's graphic novel and four featurettes. DVD buyers get two of the featurettes.
