The key words on the SIX Season 1 box (out now on Blu-ray plus Digital HD & DVD) are "Inspired by SEAL Team Six missions." The show may have aired on the History Channel, but it's a highly fictional story about brotherhood and the price paid by the families of the men who serve.

The show's broadcast was a big success and it's already been renewed for Season 2. Season 1 focuses on the saga of Richard "Rip" Taggart (Walton Goggins), the former SEAL Team Six leader who's kidnapped by Boko Haram while working as a security contractor in Nigeria. He separated from the Navy after making an questionable decision on a mission in Afghanistan and that choice may or may not be haunting him.

His former men want to rescue him and the schoolgirls who are also held hostage, but matters are complicated by Michael, an American-born terrorist with a personal grudge against Taggart.

Back home, the series focuses on the family dramas of SEALs played by Barry Sloane, Kyle Schmid and Juan Pablo Raba. The show was created by the father/son team of William and David Broyles. William served in Vietnam as a Marine and went on to a storied career as a former editor of Newsweek and screenwriter of Cast Away, Entrapment and Jarhead. David is a former Air Force PJ. Both men have a background that gives them perspective on the strains that military service can place on family life and the personal stories are the strongest part of the story.

The American-born terrorist and the team's willingness to go outside the chain of command to gain intel are far less believable. The series of questionable choices sets up a rousing final episode and a strong setup for next season. The show would be well-served by a slightly more realistic plot next time around. Also: watch all the way to the end. There's a major plot twist.
