LAST SHIP, THE

The Last Ship was a surprise hit for the TNT network last summer and now the sci-fi adventure series' first season is out on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD in advance of its second season premiere on Sunday, June 21st at 9pm/8pm central.

Based on William Brinkley's bestselling novel, the series tells the story of the crew of the USS Nathan James, a Navy ship spared infection after a viral pandemic wipes out over 80% of the world's population. Scientists on board the ship have developed a vaccine that might save what's left of the human race, but they've got to survive military engagements and conspiracies to get that vaccine into mass production.

Season One ended with a cliffhanger, one that will hopefully be resolved in the 10-episode Season Two. We've got a video clip from the Blu-ray bonus features in which cast members Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra and Adam Baldwin talk about the inspiration and guidance they've received from the real US Navy.

The Last Ship has one of those near-future science fiction plots that requires at least some connection to contemporary reality and the show tries to portray a version of the Navy that looks a lot like real life. Of course, once a virus wipes out most of the world population, all bets are off and imagination can take over.

Like most TNT shows, The Last Ship doesn't require as much devotion or concentration as HBO or AMC shows demand from viewers. It's not exactly lightweight, but it's not going to require you to join a viewers cult like the ones inspired by Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead.  Check it out.
