Photojournalist and Restrepo director Tim Hetherington was killed Wednesday in Libya while covering heavy fighting between Moammar Gaddafi’s forces and rebels in the besieged Libyan city of Misurata. Hetherington was one of the few civilians who attempted to chronicle modern war through the real experiences of troops in the field.

Restrepo was nominated for Best Documentary at this year's Oscars. While Hetherington's death is no more tragic than any of those suffered by American men and women during the last decade's wars, he deserves to be remembered as someone who risked his own life in an attempt to remind Americans of the trials and sacrifices endured by the troops who actually enlisted and traveled around the world to protect our freedoms.
