Where to Retire?

Military.com recently teamed up with USAA to choose their top 10 favorite places for military members to retire.  379 metropolitan areas were rated on a variety of factors including military base proximity, military base amenities, Veteran's Affairs hospital proximity, military pension taxation, unemployment rate, presence of colleges and universities, affordability, housing costs, housing appreciation (2007-2010), economic stability, climate, health resources, health indicators, crime, local schools, recreation, arts and culture, major airport proximity, access to mass transit, and whether it was a natural disaster-prone area. (Whew!)

And the winners are:

  1. Waco, Texas
  2. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  3. Austin/Round Rock, Texas
  4. College Station/Bryan, Texas
  5. Carlisle/Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
  6. San Angelo, Texas
  7. Madison, Wisconsin
  8. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  9. New Orleans/Metairie/Kenner, Louisiana
  10. Syracuse, New York
We've lived in Carlisle, and I can see why people would like to retire there.  It was lovely!
