Did Michael Bay's 'Armageddon' Predict NASA's Asteroid-Killing Mission?

“Armageddon” director Michael Bay is celebrating his ability to predict the future now that NASA has launched its DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) using one of Elon Musk's SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets.

Bay's 1998 movie featured a misfit crew led by Bruce Willis to drill a hole in an asteroid so that astronauts could drop in a nuclear bomb and blow it to smithereens. The NASA mission isn't quite that spectacular. The plan is that the spacecraft will slam into Dimorphos, an asteroid 525 feet across, at 15,000 mph next September and divert its path away from Earth.

That's not stopping Bay from shouting about his ability to predict the future. In an Instagram post from Nov. 24, he writes, "I told you so, but no one wanted to listen to me. NASA's DART rocket lifted off today! It's going to do a little BAYHEM in space!"

If any director has earned the right to name-check his own action-movie style with a ridiculous name, it's Bay. In addition to five "Transformers" movies, he's delivered the Benghazi drama "13 Hours" (2016), the World War II picture "Pearl Harbor" (2001) and the Alcatraz thriller "The Rock" (1996). Bay's next movie, "Ambulance," is set for release in February 2022.

Bay also expressed gratitude to NASA in an interview with The Wrap. "Our plan was not far off," Bay said. "Thank God they're doing something because these things (asteroids), they're lethal. They come in 24,000 miles an hour, if I remember correctly -- it's an airburst to the ground."

Stay tuned for the next chapter in NASA's war against Dimorphos. Will the spacecraft divert or destroy the asteroid? Or will the asteroid mow down the ship and continue its path to Earth? As Bay would suggest, stay tuned because you don't want to miss a thing.
