GTA 6 Leak Hints at More Advanced NPCs Than Any Game in the Series

According to a new leak, Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a massive amount of dialogue for its NPC characters, with "hundreds of thousands of recorded lines" outside of those spoken by the game's main characters. In GTA 6, players will take on the roles of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, who find themselves wrapped up in a criminal conspiracy set in a fictional state inspired by Florida. That means players will be headed back to Vice City, but there will be far more locations to explore as well.

Few details about the game's narrative have been revealed so far, but GTA 6 is slated to be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19. After several delays, it remains to be seen whether the developers at Rockstar Games will be able to stick to that date, but it seems the long wait is starting to come to an end. It's been more than a decade since the release of Grand Theft Auto 5, and fans are eager to see how the next game will evolve the formula while staying true to the elements that have made the series so popular.

GTA 6's Massive Amount of NPC Dialog

In a post on Twitter, the unofficial GTA 6 Countdown account has shared new information about the amount of NPC dialogue in the game. The information reportedly comes from "someone who allegedly worked on audio regression and subtitles validation." This person claims that Rockstar is significantly boosting the amount of content spoken by the game's NPCs, while paying close attention to how the interactions are triggered. The actual voice lines feature several takes, with different factors deciding when and how the specific dialogue plays. For example, an NPC's tone might change based on the time of day, or if they actually saw a player commit a crime versus just hearing about it. Other factors can include the weather, with the non-player characters getting more annoyed if specific events happen when it's raining, or if it's a particularly hot day in the Sunshine State.

The leaker claims that voice actors are recording multiple versions of the same lines for GTA 6 to reflect these changes, and while some might sound very close to one another, the goal is to have different inflections that match what's happening on-screen. Rockstar is also going to great lengths to ensure that the same language isn't repeated, even if players remain in the same area. The GTA 6 Countdown account notes that none of this information is confirmed, but they also pointed to the massive amount of dialogue in Red Dead Redemption 2 to show that this is at least plausible.

If Rockstar Games really is dedicating this many resources just to the game's NPCs, it would help explain GTA 6's potential $3 billion budget. It seems the developers are sparing no expense to deliver an experience that feels worth the wait, which is going to be difficult. By the time the game is released, it will have been at least 13 years since GTA 5's arrival. Anything less than a significant jump over the previous game is going to result in heavy scrutiny. It's rare that there's this long a gap between releases in a hugely popular series, and it remains to be seen how the developers have been using that time.
