With warmer weather on the way, more motorcycle riders will be cruising down the highways. But whether you're on a motorcycle or behind the wheel of a car, it's everyone's responsibility to safely use the road.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reminds motorists that motorcycles have the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle and urges drivers to be "extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safer."

As for the riders themselves, wearing a U.S. Department of Transportation-approved helmet can make the difference between life and death, according to the NHTSA. The latest NHTSA data shows that helmet use saved the lives of 1,544 motorcycle riders. An additional 709 deaths might have been prevented if all riders had been wearing helmets. Overall, helmet use is estimated to prevent 37% of fatalities among motorcycle riders and 41% of motorcycle passengers.

Choosing the right helmet can make a huge difference in safety, as well, the agency says. Check out NHTSA's tips and videos on helmet use and safety.
