A U.S. Naval Test Pilot School instructor became the Navy’s first-ever recipient of the Army’s Broken Wing Award during a ceremony June 6 at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Maryland. While descending between 9,000 and 12,000 feet per minute during an October 2016 mishap, test pilot trainer Barb Gordon, a former Navy lieutenant commander, had less than five seconds to recover her UH-60L helicopter in which she was training a test pilot. An investigation found the accident would have been catastrophic if not for the immediate actions by Gordon and then-student Sylvia Grandstaff, now a chief warrant officer 3 and a test pilot at Redstone Test Center, Alabama.
